Center for Heart & Vascular Health

Vein Center

Do you experience discomfort, swelling and varicose veins? If so, you may be suffering from superficial venous reflux disease. Approximately 25 million people in the United States suffer from this condition. Traditionally, patients diagnosed with venous reflux would undergo surgery. If untreated, superficial venous reflux disease can worsen over time.

Now, at the Vein Center of Christiana Care Vascular Specialists, patients can be treated with a minimally invasive outpatient procedure called Closure. In this procedure, a tiny, radio-frequency-powered catheter is positioned in the diseased vein through a small opening in the skin. The catheter delivers heat to the vein wall, causing it to shrink until it seals closed. Once the diseased vein is closed, blood is rerouted to other healthy veins.

Patients who undergo the Closure procedure typically resume normal activities within a day. Many patients report immediate relief of leg swelling, pain and other symptoms, with steady, gradual improvement over six months following the procedure.

Complete care for venous disease

In addition to the Closure procedure, the doctors at the Vein Venter of Christiana Care Vascular Specialists are experienced in a wide variety of treatment options for veinous disease, including:

  • Traditional vascular surgery, including vein stripping.
  • Sclerotherapy.
  • Microphlebectomy.

Your vascular specialist will evaulate your specific condition and advise you on the best treatment options.
