Nutrition Services

Sports Nutrition Services

Peak performance is every athlete's goal, and performance can be dramatically affected by food consumption. Christiana Care's Sports Nutrition Services provides athletes and active individuals with personal nutrition guidance to enhance mental and physical performance. How can we help you to boost your performance?

Nutrition assessment and counseling

Our registered dietitians can provide you with a personal nutrition training plan, ensuring adequate intake to enhance training, maximize performance and assist in the prevention of chronic disease. This plan will be designed to focus on nutrition topics most pertinent to your needs, including sport-specific diet plans and supplements tailored to various phases of the training cycle. A computer analysis of your diet will help the nutritionist to evaluate:

  • Average calorie, vitamin and mineral intake.
  • Distribution of calories from carbohydrates.
  • Protein, fat and nutrient deficiencies and excesses.

Resting metabolic rate testing

Resting metabolic rate (RMR) testing measures the number of calories your body burns while at rest. This information can be used to:

  • Calculate your calorie needs for weight maintenance, gain or loss.
  • Measure changes in aerobic fitness.
  • Help estimate athletic potential for realistic goal setting.
  • Help in designing exercise training programs.
  • The results and analysis of RMR testing will be reviewed with you as part of your overall nutrition assessment.

Team nutritional assessments

Our nutritional assessment services for athletic teams can identify athletes at risk for chronic disease, injury or poor performance due to dietary and lifestyle habits. All information collected is confidential, and team members are given the option for individual nutrition follow up.

Group presentations

Sports nutritionists are available to give presentations to athletic teams, coaches and parents on sports-nutrition topics, including:

  • Nutrition training, recovery nutrition and game-day nutrition.
  • Importance of carbohydrates in performance.
  • Fluid replacement.
  • Protein needs.
  • Eating on the road, and pre- and post-competition eating.
  • Ergogenic aids.
  • Safe and effective weight loss or weight gain.
