Residency ProgramsEmergency Medicine/Family Medicine

Program Years 2-3

The curriculum in the second and third years is longitudinal and incorporates core family medicine training with the innovative elements described here. The longitudinal curriculum consists of required elements as well as individualized components. The details of this are discussed during orientation and are briefly reviewed below.

Family medicine patient panel

Continuity time in the Family Medicine Center (at the Foulk Road and Wilmington Annex locations) serves as the core of resident training. Residents will be expected to see patients in both locations but may request a location to work out of most often.

Core sessions

The following experiences are considered core to family medicine; upper year residents are required to cover these sessions. They occur every week, and the coverage is divided equally among all upper years on a schedule determined by the chiefs:

  • Nursing home.
  • Geriatric assessments.
  • OB clinic.
  • Pediatric ER.
  • Colposcopy clinic.
  • Medical student clinic.
  • Claymont Clinic for uninsured.

Interest tracking

Residents will work with their advisers and the program director to define an area of interest in which the resident will incorporate longitudinally through the two upper years. When possible, an interest will be nurtured by creating a continuity experience in the interest area.

Wilmington Hospital Inpatient Service (WHIP)

Residents will be assigned six to eight weeks of daytime inpatient coverage and two to three weeks of night float. A second-year orientation will be held to transition first-year residents to upper-year status. Inpatient policies and procedures will be issued and reviewed at that time.

What would my schedule look like as an upper-year?

It will be a mix of required curricular experiences and interest-area experiences.
