Residency Programs
Periodontics
This program expands your understanding of diseases that affect the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. Expect to gain a background in the practical application of periodontal therapy in a general dental setting.
You will learn how to diagnose periodontal disease and plan treatment for patients who have it. The causes of periodontal disease and its effect on other parts of the body are covered, as well as periodontal disease prevention. You also will learn how general practitioners and periodontists work together to manage periodontal patients.
You will gain experience treating periodontal patients, though it is limited due to time constraints. However, once you finish this program, you should be able to identify when patients need periodontal care, plan treatment and feel comfortable co-managing these cases with a periodontist. You also will gain expertise in nonsurgical periodontal therapy and an understanding of surgical concepts.
