Helen F. Graham Cancer Center

Pain and Symptom Management

Multidisciplinary care at the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center includes the opportunity for you to meet with a rehabilitation team to help you overcome problems related to your cancer or your cancer treatment. You may be experiencing a variety of symptoms, such as nausea, fatigue and pain. Or you may experience skin, muscle or bone problems that can make even the simplest daily tasks more difficult. You may also need specialized therapy to treat problems with speech or swallowing, for example, or to relieve the symptoms of lymphedema (swelling and fluid retention).

The latest therapies and techniques are available to you, including physical therapy, medications, self-directed exercise, counseling and support groups. Your oncology rehabilitation
team will meet with you to assess your needs and develop a rehabilitation plan that works best for you. In addition, they can help you access other programs and services offered through Christiana Care or elsewhere in the community.

The oncology rehabilitation team works closely with the entire multidisciplinary team of cancer specialists who are treating your particular type of cancer. Members of the oncology rehabilitation team meet regularly and include:

  • A rehabilitation and pain-management specialist (physiatrist) who will evaluate your symptoms and recommend appropriate treatment and referrals. The physiatrist can also direct and coordinate the course of your cancer-rehabilitation therapy.
  • A psychologist who can offer counseling and support to help you address any emotional or psychological concerns associated with your cancer or cancer treatment.
  • A registered dietitian who can help you with loss of appetite or other nutrition problems.
  • Occupational, physical and speech therapists who can provide specialized therapy.

Depending on your current health, you may be referred to additional medical specialists. The entire multidisciplinary team will work together, in consultation with your primary care physician and with your care-management nurse, to create the most appropriate and effective rehabilitation plan to meet your needs.
