Nutrition Outreach Programs

Nutrition Services also works in New Castle County schools to prevent obesity and promote awareness of the benefits of good nutrition. This includes working through the High School Wellness Centers.

Dare to Live Healthy—the Red Clay Way

Dare to Live Healthy—the Red Clay Way is an award-winning, multi-component, obesity-prevention program at Brandywine Springs School. The program was funded by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Delaware in partnership with Christiana Care.

The program serves the entire school community, including students, staff and families. It promotes behaviors that are associated with healthy weight in children: increasing fruit and vegetable consumption to at least five per day, decreasing screen time to less than two hours per day, increasing physical activity to more than an hour per day, and decreasing intake of sugar-sweetened beverages less than two per week. Program components include:

10-week, family-based healthy lifestyles program for overweight students, ages 8–13.
Weekly open-gym nights, with a more structured program during the winter, including exercise and nutrition demonstrations, giveaways, dance and healthy food.
School garden, where students plant, maintain, harvest and consume vegetables.
Staff physical-activity program after school.
Nutrition education classes for 6th graders.
Girls on the Run: A running and life-skills program for 3rd–5th grade girls.
Action video game used in PE class, at open-gym nights and at class reward parties.
