LSVT BIG for Parkinson's Disease
LSVT BIG therapy can help people with Parkinson's disease to improve their movement. This technique often yields measurable results within the first hour of treatment, and over time it not only helps patients to improve their movement; it also helps them to build confidence in themselves.
Adapted from the principles behind the successful Lee Silverman Voice Treatment, LSVT BIG therapy includes repetitive, exaggerated movements that increase dopamine production in the brain and recalibrate muscle function. This helps to counteract the slow movement—bradykinesia—that is one of the main motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease.
BIG therapy can also benefit patients whose motor function has been affected by other conditions, including stroke, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy and Down syndrome.
For best results, LSVT BIG should be incorporated into treatment at the time of diagnosis, instead of waiting until loss of function becomes pronounced.
