Diabetes Education
Understanding how to live with and manage your diabetes is one of the most important ways to ensure that you live a long and healthy life. Christiana Care offers a variety of group and individual education programs at locations throughout New Castle County.
Living With Diabetes
This 8-hour, comprehensive group program will teach you about target blood-sugar levels, testing your blood, diabetes medications, meal planning, exercise, stress management, foot care and standards of diabetes care. It includes individualized attention in pre- and post-class appointments with a certified diabetes educator. It is appropriate for anyone with diabetes or pre-diabetes. Saturday and weekday classes are available. This program is covered by most insurance plans. Please call if you need financial assistance to participate in this program.
Individual counseling sessions
One-on-one counseling is available with a nurse educator or a registered dietitian to help you achieve effective diabetes control. Topics that can be covered include:
- A diabetes overview to help you learn about your type of diabetes, review basic survival skills and help lower your risks for diabetic complications.
- Blood glucose testing, including selecting and using a meter and understanding your test results.
- Instruction on how to use insulin and injectable medications.
- Nutrition and meal planning to help define options that can work for you.
Counting Carbohydrates
In this group class, you'll learn how to plan healthy meals and how to "read" a food label in order to help you improve or better manage your blood sugar levels. A registered nurse or dietitian teaches these small-group sessions.
