Cancer Psychology
If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with cancer, you may find it helpful to seek emotional and psychological support. You can rely on our experienced, compassionate psychologists at the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center to help relieve worry and stress, which goes a long way to promoting healing and recovery.
Our cancer psychologists—licensed clinical psychologists who specialize in helping people who have cancer—are available for consultations with individuals, couples and sometimes even entire families. You may benefit from a consultation if you are suffering from cancer yourself, or if a loved one is facing cancer and you need support.
When should you contact a cancer psychologist?
You do not have to wait until you are referred by your doctor. Our psychologists are available to help at any time before, during and after your course of treatment. If you answer yes to any of these questions, call us to schedule a consultation:
- Do you feel overwhelmed and don't know how to cope?
- Is your overall distress interfering with your ability to participate in your medical care?
- Is your distress causing problems in other areas of life, such as at home with family, in your role as a parent or spouse, or at your job?
- Are you are looking for general support and counselling to help you cope with cancer?
- Do you want help talking with your family, children or friends about cancer?
- Are you looking for help talking with doctors and other medical staff?
- Do you want help in making healthy changes to your diet or your level of physical activity?
- Would you like to learn proven stress-management techniques, including breathing exercises, imagery and meditation, which may help you during your cancer treatment?
- Do you have a history of mental-health issues, and is cancer making these challenges more difficult?
- Do you feel like you need help in adjusting to symptoms or treatment side-effects?
- Do you want help finding ways to move forward after treatment ends?
- Do you struggle with fear that your cancer will return?
- Are you caring for a loved one who has cancer and feel like you need support?
