Call Structure
The Christiana Care Internal Medicine Residency Program adheres fully to the ACGME duty hour restrictions in effect as of July 1, 2003.
We have a fully integrated night float system on every inpatient rotation and have eliminated cross-cover call from elective or ambulatory rotations. Interns do an average of three weeks of inpatient floor night float and two weeks of ICU night float during the first year. Intern night float is a 12 1/2 hour nightly shift from Sunday through Thursday night. Interns on inpatient rotations average call every third or fourth night, with Sunday through Thursday being short call until 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday being a traditional overnight call.
Upper-year residents take an average of four weeks of ICU night float and two weeks of Floor night float call in each year. On inpatient floors, upper-year residents take call every sixth night, with only Friday and Saturday being overnight call. In the MICU and CICU, the upper year residents work a staggered shift schedule with overnight call only on Saturday night.
